Carers Week is here!

Updated: 7 days ago

Today marks the beginning of Carers Week which aims to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

Carers & Communities provides support to unpaid carers across Worcestershire and we are celebrating carers in a big way this Carers Week, whilst also recognising the tremendous role they play in our communities and society as a whole, often in challenging circumstances.

Our aim this week is to help carers understand they are carers which in turn opens the door to information, advice, support and events.

Our website is full of information about what we have to offer and you can find this here:

What is a carer?

Lots of people don’t realise they are a carer, here are a few things that might help you decide.

·        Do you help a loved one who couldn’t cope without you?

·        Maybe you support them all the time, or just a few hours a week.

·        If they rely on you because of illness, disability or age - you are a carer.

Why is it important to understand you are a carer?

·        Becoming a carer can feel overwhelming. You suddenly have extra responsibilities, but may not know where to go for help.

·        Caring for someone can be rewarding – but it can also be tiring and stressful.

·        Getting the right advice and support at the right time can really help – for both you and the person you care for.

If you would like to understand more about caring – you can find more information our 'are you a carer' page:

New to caring?

Some carers have been caring for a number of years and some may be new to the role. It can be difficult to navigate through the various systems and understand what is available.

If you are new to caring, we have a dedicated page with all you may need to know.

The Carers Hub, funded by Worcestershire County Council and run by Carers & Communities, helps to raise awareness and co-ordinate support for adult carers across Worcestershire.

Support is provided in many areas including:

If you need either of the following:

  • Discuss what support might be available to you as a carer

  • Request an assessment of your needs as a Carer to get support

You can self-refer to the Carers Hub online using the Worcestershire Adults Portal or through the Ask for Support self-referral form.

We are also available to by phone, email, post and webchat, so please do get in touch with any queries. We are here to help.
